Fan favorite Paynter took the lead in the stretch but could not hold off fast-finishing Kettle Corn in the San Diego Handicap on July 27 at Del Mar, where he settled for a game runner-up finish.
Paynter showed incredible heart with his will to survive life-threatening colitis and laminitis following his 2012 victory in the Haskell Invitational Stakes. He thrilled his legion of loyal followers with a win in June at Hollywood Park in his comeback race.
The long-range target for Paynter is the Breeders' Cup World Championship, so his owner Zayat Stables and his faithful following hope the best is yet to come for the 4-year-old Awesome Again colt.
