Gary Barber's Appealing Tale, a grade II winner in his last two starts, will miss the Breeders' Cup due to an ankle injury he sustained in training, trainer Peter Miller said Oct. 25.
Pre-entered in both the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) and the Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), the 5-year-old Tale of the Cat gelding worked four furlongs in :48 4/5 at San Luis Rey Training Center Oct. 24.
"He re-injured his ankle and will be fine with time," Miller said Sunday. "(It's) very disappointing. I felt like he would win the (Dirt Mile). (He) was in lifetime form."
After second-place finishes in the Triple Bend Stakes (gr. I) and San Diego Handicap (gr. II) early in the summer, Appealing Tale broke through in the Pat O'Brien Stakes (gr. II) at Del Mar Aug. 22 to qualify for the Dirt Mile, then followed that performance with a score in the Kelso Handicap (gr. II) at Belmont Park Oct. 3.
