Gregory W. Kelly, a Thoroughbred breeder and owner, passed away Oct. 13. He was 86.
Kelly spent his entire career in the automobile and real estate businesses. Along with his two brothers, he owned automobile dealerships in Florida, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
As an owner, Kelly raced in the U.S., France, and England either individually, in partnership with his son, Stephen Kelly, or in partnership with his brother, Edward J. Kelly Jr., and his nephew, Michael Kelly.
Kelly was also part of the partnership that campaigned grade I winner and sire Offlee Wild . As a breeder, Kelly was the breeder or co-breeder of a number of stake horses, including Commendable, winner of the 2000 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), and multiple European group I-winning hurdler Detroit City, who also won the historic Ceasarwitch Handicap on the flat at Newmarket in 2006.
