Three-time Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) runner-up Red Cadeaux, who sustained a career-ending injury while making his fifth appearance in that race Nov. 3 at Flemington racecourse, will be retired to "Living Legends" retirement facility near Melbourne, Australia, Racing Post reports.

The 9-year-old son of Cadeaux Genereux was pulled up nearing the finish line with a serious fetlock injury but is recovering well following surgery, British-based trainer Ed Dunlop said.

"I spoke with my traveling head lad Robin Trevor-Jones this morning and he said he's happy with Red Cadeaux and how he has come through his surgery,  and he's well on the mend," Dunlop said.

"I can't stress enough the role the vets at Flemington racecourse as well as the University of Melbourne Veterinary Centre played and well done to all," Dunlop said. "Obviously his rehabilitation is ongoing and it will be some time until he's ready to be moved, but he won't be coming home."

Dunlop said discussions are ongoing with Living Legends to eventually transfer Red Cadeaux, owned by Hong Kong businessman Ron Arculli, to the 1,500-acre facility, which is home to several previous Melbourne Cup winners.

Red Cadeaux, a gelding, has seven wins in 54 starts for earnings of $7,850,451. For more on Living Legends facility, click here.
