'Pharoah' Up for 2015 Sportsman of the Year

American Pharoah won this year's Belmont Stakes to become first Triple Crown winner since 1978

Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner American Pharoah   is among 12 candidates for the 2015 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.

The Zayat Stables' homebred colt by Pioneerof the Nile   retired after his Oct. 31 Classic victory and will stand at Ashford Stud in Central Kentucky in 2016.

Sports Illustrated will announce the winner Dec. 14. The other candidates are gymnast Simone Biles, runner Usain Bolt, basketball player Steph Curry, pro football player Thomas Davis, tennis players Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, soccer players Carli Lloyd and Lionel Messi, mixed martial artist Rhonda Rousey, golfer Jordan Speith, and the 2015 World Series champion Kansas City Royals.
