The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission fined Dr. Jason Wells $2,500 as a result of the improper administration of the anti-bleeder medication Lasix that resulted in the scratch of Talmada from the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT).
Talmada was scratched from the 1 3/16-mile turf race at Keeneland by stewards after it was determined that the medication had been administered by a private veterinarian. Only state-employed veterinarians can administer Lasix for use on race day.
Owned by Sheikh Ahmed al Maktoum and Darley Stud Management, Talmada, second in the E.P. Taylor Stakes (Can-IT) Oct. 18 at Woodbine, had drawn in from the also-eligible list for the Filly and Mare Turf after the earlier scratch of Bawina.
