Southern California trainer Charles "Chuck" Treece earned the 1,000th Thoroughbred win of his career on the night of March 14 when favored Unstoppablesteve won the opening race at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Treece, also a successful Quarter Horse trainer, won a second Thoroughbred race on the card Friday night as well with favored Augsburg in the seventh race.
The milestone win with Unstoppablesteve came with Ramon Guce in the saddle for Treece, who also owned the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Stephen Got Even . The 1-2 favorite in the field of six completed 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.64. The chestnut gelding was claimed out of the race for $2,500 by trainer Mario Loza.
The 55-year-old Treece, a resident of Los Alamitos with his wife, Debi, passed the 1,000-win threshold in Quarter Horse racing in April 2004. The former Quarter Horse jockey has led trainers at Los Alamitos in Thoroughbred wins six times. He conditioned stakes-placed Letthebiggatorout, a six-time winner at Los Alamitos for owner Debi Treece.
According to Equibase, Treece has had 5,771 starters in Thoroughbred races with total purse earnings of $6,721,727. He trained sparingly from 1984-92 before collecting his first Thoroughbred win in 1993. His best year came in 2013 when his horses earned $600,777 while winning 84 of 406 starts.
