Road to the 2016 Triple Crown

The Kentucky Derby is less than 100 days away, and the race is on to earn Derby points and a spot in the 2016 Kentucky Derby starting gate. Last year saw American Pharoah win the Triple Crown, making this season's run even more exciting as we wait to see if we can have back-to-back Triple Crowns after a 37 year drought.
Made up of 35 races that lead to the 2016 Kentucky Derby, the Road to the Kentucky Derby started at Churchill Downs on Sept. 12. Early season races give horses a chance to pick up a maximum of 10 points for each Road to the Kentucky Derby race they run in, with the exception of the 20 points awarded to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner, with the trail working its way up to races worth 100 points for a win in late March. The 20 horses with the most points after the final race of the Road to the Kentucky Derby will automatically be qualified to run in the Derby on May 7 with horses farther down the list getting into the race if one of the top 20 horses decides to skip the Kentucky Derby before race day.
