Maggi Moss' Control Stake, the lone 3-year-old in the field, got the jump on the competition from the gate and wasn't headed en route to a solid win in the $60,000 Thanksgiving Handicap at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots Nov. 26.
The colt by Discreetly Mine out of the Quiet American mare Be a Quiet Honey finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Officer Griffin, who chased him in second throughout the six furlongs. Grade III winner Clearly Now, the heavy favorite, checked in third, while Ride On Curlin, second in last year's Preakness Stakes (gr. I), finished fifth in his first start since May.
Control Stake, ridden by Colby Hernandez for trainer Tom Amoss, paid $12.40 to win and covered the distance on a fast track in 1:09.83. It was the third stakes victory this year for Control Stake, who earlier won the Big Drama at Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel and Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.
Control Stake was bred in Florida by BPN.
