So far in 2014, the biggest $2 win payout is $164.20 when Warmhearted Windy won the 10th race at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 17 at 81.10-to-1 odds. That record was threatened on March 20 at Aqueduct in the 10th race, and while Harry Consolidator had more than enough to win on the track he came up just short of Warmhearted Windy’s mark at the betting window.

Sent off at 78.75-to-1 odds, the Consolidator gelding stalked an easy pace and held off the top two betting choices to win by three-quarters of a length. Those bettors who plunked down a couple of bucks on the longshot were rewarded with a $2 win payout of $159.50 and a $2 place return of $66.50.

I always like to go back and take a look at horses that win at astronomical prices to see if there were any signs that a big performance was possible, but in this case I don’t see anything that would have provided an indicator of an impending big effort.

Harry Consolidator had lost his previous 29 races, including his last 17 by 12 lengths or more.  I’d say my only shot would have been if I had my daughter with me and Harry Consolidator’s owner had pink and/or purple silks.

One big payout for the week ended March 23 that was much considerably more logical, yet still quite challenging, for handicappers was the early Pick 4 on March 22 at Oaklawn Park.

The sequence started out with a win by 5.30-to-1 Catfeinated in Race 2 followed by a victory by 7-to-5 favorite Dance With Monarch in Race 3. Slick Pardoned Me struck next at 23.60-to-1, the longest shot in a 7-horse field, to ruin the tickets of most bettors. The Pick 4 closed in Race 5 with 9.50-to-1 Have It My Way holding on to win by a length to conclude a $1 Pick 4 that paid $54,880.80.

Obviously, Slick Pardoned Me was the key to the huge return. Not only was he the biggest longshot in the field but he also defeated the biggest favorite in the entire 4-race sequence, Winkatdawat, a 9-to-10 favorite from the barn of Gary Hartlage.

Race 8 on March 23 at Turf Paradise keyed a number of the top payouts for the week ended March 23. Won by 43.40-to-1 longshot Serge to Paradise with 23.50-to-1 Gilded Knight finishing second, the race produced the top $1 exacta payout ($794.90), the highest $1 Quinella return ($188.60), the highest $1 trifecta score ($11,730.50) and the biggest $1 superfecta payout ($49,664.40). With only $20,071 in the superfecta pool, we can deduct that the winning supefecta tickets were 10-cent tickets that returned $4,966.44. The eighth race at Turf Paradise also was the second half of the top $1 Daily Double payout for the week at $373.50.

The chase for the elusive Rainbow 6 continues with a carryover of $3,914,468 for Wednesday’s card at Gulfstream Park. The Rainbow Pick 6 starts with Race 5 with a scheduled first post time of 3:01 p.m. ET.
Good luck!
