Derby Owner’s Trophy, American Pharoah Halter Offered at Auction

The 1985 Kentucky Derby owner’s trophy and a halter worn by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah are among the horse racing highlights of a vintage sports auction taking place now at www.lelands.com.
In addition to the owner’s trophy, the saddlecloth worn by 1985 Derby winner Spend a Buck and the silks worn by jockey Angel Cordero Jr. for the same race are also offered at the auction. 
Additional one-of-a-kind horse racing memorabilia featured in the auction include a 1936 Seabiscuit horseshoe presentation silver ashtray, a Ruffian race-worn saddle from Jacinto Vasquez and Alfred Vanderbilt’s personal racing silks. Silks worn by Alydar during his famed rivalry with Affirmed throughout the 1978 Triple Crown, Secretariat julep cups from owner Penny Chenery and a Secretariat horseshoe nail from the 1973 Belmont Stakes can also be bid on, as can memorabilia from Alydar’s 1977 Champagne Stakes win and Stage Door Johnny’s 1968 Belmont Stakes win.

The auction is held by prominent sports auction house Leland’s, and is open for bidding through Jan. 8, 2016. Non-racing-related memorabilia offered during the sale includes a Syracuse Orangemen jersey worn by Ernie Davis during his Heisman-winning season, a Speedo swimsuit worn by gold medalist Michael Phelps during the 2008 Olympics and a baseball bat used by Babe Ruth.
