The Grade 1, $350,000 Los Alamitos Futurity attracted a field of seven contenders, ranging from a colt still seeking his first win to a Grade 1-placed stakes winner, and Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert appears on paper to have the race surrounded.
The 2015 Triple Crown-winning trainer entered the top two choices on the morning line for Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile race in Mor Spirit and Toews On Ice.
Mor Spirit is the 8-to-5 morning-line favorite and will be ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens. Stevens was aboard for this runner’s only win back in October at Santa Anita Park. After that maiden-breaking score, he shipped to Churchill Downs, where he finished second in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes as the betting favorite in a field of 13. His preferred running style looks to be stalking the pacesetters while waiting to make his move in the stretch, and his stablemate Toews On Ice probably will be on the lead.
Toews On Ice started his career with a bit of a disappointing effort at Del Mar in July when he was heavily favored but ended up finishing third in his debut. Something must have clicked for this guy, because he’s now put together a three-race winning streak entering this race. All three of his wins have been in stakes races, but none has come at a distance beyond seven furlongs. That might be the chink in his armor.
I landed on the most lightly raced colt in this field: Sorryaboutnothing. He earned his maiden win in his most recent start, via disqualification. Los Alamitos Futurity entrant Urlacher finished first in that race but was disqualified to second for interference in the the stretch.
That was Sorryaboutnothing’s first race around two turns and he showed some good ability despite his trip. He was wide going into the first turn and remained wide on the backstretch while also making a wide move into the stretch. He chased a good pace that day and was finishing with energy after having to steady hard and alter course in the final yards. I like that this is only his third lifetime start. That could mean there is plenty of room for improvement.
If neither Baffert horse fires his best effort, Sorryaboutnothing should be in prime position to win.
Strategy on a $20 Budget:
$10 win: #6 Sorryaboutnothing ($10)
$5 exacta: 6 with 4 ($5)
$5 exacta: 6 with 5 ($5)
