Canterbury Park received approval from the Minnesota Racing Commission Dec. 17 to conduct a 69-day Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet in 2016.

The meet will begin Friday, May 20 and run through Sept. 17.

First post for racing on Thursdays and Fridays will be 6:30 p.m., with weekend and holiday racing at 12:45 p.m. with the exception of Saturdays in August which will have a 6:30 p.m. first post.

"We anticipate that our 2016 meet, which will stretch into the middle of September, will provide the highest quality racing product in the history of Canterbury Park," vice president of racing operations Eric Halstrom said. "The off-season interest from horsemen around the country is an indicator that we will continue our ascent nationally and help bring racing in Minnesota to the next level."

The 2016 stakes schedule and purse structure will be announced in January.

Canterbury had gains in attendance and handle for its 70-day meet in 2015.
