The $1-million Wood Memorial Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct drew 11 3-year-olds seeking to solidify their credentials for the Kentucky Derby on May 3.
The Wood Memorial is New York’s signature prep race for the first jewel of the Triple Crown. The last horse to complete the Wood Memorial-Kentucky Derby double was Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000; although Funny Cide finished second in the Wood Memorial in 2003 and went on to win the Derby and the Preakness.

Other notable Wood Memorial Stakes winners over the years include Triple Crown winners Seattle Slew, Assault, Count Fleet and Gallant Fox. Secretariat finished third in the Wood Memorial in 1973 before sweeping the Triple Crown.
