Good luck trying to catch X Y Jet.
The son of Kantharos was untouchable on the lead again Jan. 16 in the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
The gray gelding didn't break on top Saturday, but quickly made up for it. With jockey Emisael Jaramillo aboard for trainer Jorge Navarro, X Y Jet blew by Wildcat Red and El Botas on the outside and set sizzling fractions of :21.71 and :43.96 through a half-mile and cruised to a 4 1/4-length victory.
"He broke kind of slow, which made me a little nervous, but he was coming from the eight hole so he didn't have enough time to be right there," Navarro said. "He's just a super horse. He's a fast, fast horse."
X Y Jet hit the wire in 1:08.58 and paid $3.20 to win as the 3-5 favorite. Wildcat Red came in second, followed by C. Zee, 3 1/2 lengths back.
It was the fourth straight victory of X Y Jet and his second straight stakes score, following his 9 1/4-length runaway in the Mr. Prospector Stakes (gr. III) Dec. 19 at Gulfstream.
"That was a big race last time out, so I was concerned," Navarro said. "I was worried. People were telling me, 'You have it,' but nothing is easy, guys. Come on. That was a big, big performance. He's doing good right now."
Bred in Florida by Didier Plasencia, out of the Lost Soldier mare Soldiersingsblues, X Y Jet has $304,893 in earnings and a 5-5-1 record from 13 starts for Gelfenstein Farm.
A race later, grade III winner Amelia's Wild Ride split horses and surged late to claim the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Turf Sprint under jockey Jose Lezcano. The D'wildcat horse ran five furlongs in :58.51 on good turf and paid $8.20 to win.
