Thoroughbred owner Donald Leifeld, who won back-to-back editions of Fonner Park's biggest stakes, died Jan. 16 in St. Paul, Neb. He was 61.
Racing as D and L Trucking, Leifeld, of Grand Island, Neb., captured the 1996 Bosselman Gus Fonner Handicap with Sahara King and the 1997 edition of the race with Windy's Halo. Both horses were trained by Thomas Garry.
Leifeld, who also trained some of his horses, owned construction and trucking businesses. His horses also won stakes in Southern California.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. CST Jan. 22 at Curran Funeral Chapel in Grand Island, with a vigil service at 7. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 23 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island.
