When it comes to attending outdoor events, finding the best look for your hair can be tricky. The elements of Mother Nature can turn a sleek hairdo into a frizzy, wind-blown mess! Nothing is worse than spending hours straightening, blow drying and styling your hair only to have a gust of wind or afternoon shower leave it limp and lifeless. But don’t worry, there are some great options out there, including two looks that guarantee to turn heads.

Wanting to find that perfect hairstyle for the races, I turned to the experts at Blo in Uptown New Orleans for tips on how to achieve their favorite looks. They nailed it down to their two favorite styles that are super easy to accomplish, work great on all hair types and lengths, and, the best part is, the messier they are, the better!

FIRST RACE LOOK: LOOSE WAVES
Sensual, innocent and chic, messy beach waves are the perfect look for the races. What’s great about this look is that even if it falls by the end of the day, you still look effortlessly fabulous. This style works great with shorter hair that is just above the shoulders, all the way down to long locks.

LOOSE WAVES 101:
Estimated time: 10-15 minutes
To achieve the loose wave look, you will need a light hair spray. The gals at Blo suggest UNITE GO365. The product is vegan and sulphate free, which means it’s ok to use if your hair has had a Keratin treatment or highlights.
You’ll also need a one inch barrel with high heat setting of 400 degrees. (The smaller the barrel, the tighter the curls; the bigger the barrel, the looser the curls.)

STEP ONE: Start from the bottom and move up. Section hair and clip the rest out of the way.
STEP TWO: Apply a small amount of hair spray to the pieces of hair you are about to curl.
STEP THREE: Holding the curling iron at an angle, wrap a one-inch piece of hair around the barrel. Hold the barrel clip open, do not close it over your hair. Hold for 8 to 10 seconds.
STEP FOUR: Release piece from curling iron … and repeat!

LOOSE WAVES BEFORE AND AFTER

NEXT RACE LOOK: THE FISHTAIL
Estimated time: 5-10 minutes
“This sea-inspired plait can be perfectly neat or purposely messy. Either way the fishtail braid is perpetually high fashion.” -- Blo
Wear it to the side, down low and look great at the races!

This braid might take a few tries to get the hang of it, but once you figure it out it’s super easy to create.
The pros at Blo break it down step by step:
STEP ONE: Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the left section.
STEP TWO: Pull it over the top of the left section, and grasp it under the right section. In other words, the strand of hair has gone over the left section and finishes under the right section.

STEP THREE:  Repeat on the right side. Pull a skinny strand of hair from the outside of the right section, pull it over the right section, then weave it under the left section.

STEP FOUR:  Keep alternating sides, weaving over and under, until you reach the bottom of the braid. Secure with a rubber band. Pull at both sides to loosen.

TADAH! This braid will stay in all day and the messier the better!
