Untapable Breezes at Churchill Downs

Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred Untapable, likely favorite for the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), breezed five furlongs in 1:00 under the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs the morning of April 20.

Working in company with a stablemate, the 3-year-old daughter of Tapit  —Fun House, by Prized, breezed in fractional splits of : 12 2/5, :24 2/5, and 36 2/5, and galloped out six furlongs  in 1:13 3/5 with Rosie Napravnik aboard. The Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) winner, trained by Steve Asmussen, finished nine lengths in front of her workmate.

"It is a remedy that we've been using all winter is to let Rosie work her a couple of weeks out (from a race)," Asmussen said.  "With how it's been working, we wanted her to stay on the same path and it's because of how talented she (Untapable) is. You've got to let her do something sometime.

"She's a tremendously talented filly that's traveling extremely well. There's no denying her ability and this is more of the same. This is what we've seen all winter. She's just exceptional."

Untapable carries an unbeaten record at Churchill Downs heading into the May 2 Kentucky Oaks. She won her career debut at the track on June 20, 2013 and returned on Sept. 7 to take the Pocahontas (gr. II) in her next outing.

Asmussen's filly turned in her only poor effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park, where she finished eighth. Then she rebounded with a solid third-place run in the Hollywood Starlet (gr. I) and was unbeaten in her two stakes starts in 2014 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Untapable, who tops the Oaks points list with 160, has won four of six starts and earned $548,125.

Asmussen said Untapable's final Kentucky Oaks work would be scheduled on Sunday, April 27.

Among other Oaks hopefuls, On Cloud Nine LLC's Fantasy grade III winner Sugar Shock galloped under exercise rider Seth VanDyke with the filly doing a two-minute lick for the final three-eighths of a mile.

Trainer Doug Anderson is scheduled to arrive in Louisville on Sunday afternoon. Calvin Borel will have the mount in the Oaks.

Kaleem Shah's Sunland Park Oaks winner Awesome Baby and Christopher Dunn and Loooch Racing Stable's Ria Antonia are scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs April 21 from their Southern California base for trainer Bob Baffert, according to exercise rider Jorge Alvarez.

Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings' Got Lucky and Mathis Stable's My Miss Sophia walked the shedrow at trainer Todd Pletcher's barn Sunday a day after posting :48 half-mile works here.

Ginny DePasquale, assistant to Pletcher, reported both fillies came out of the works in good order.

A  third  Pletcher Oaks hopeful, Gerard and Alain Wertheimer's In Tune, is scheduled to arrive at Churchill Downs April 22.

Trainer Wayne Catalano's two Kentucky Oaks hopefuls, James Miller's Aurelia's Belle and Gary and Mary West's Room Service, galloped after the morning renovation break with Calamity Compton aboard both fillies.

Both fillies worked half-miles at Churchill Downs April 16.

"I didn't want to do too much with them being it was the first work on the dirt here," said Catalano, whose son-in-law Channing Hill will ride Aurelia's Belle in the Oaks.

Catalano said Shaun Bridgmohan, who was aboard Room Service in her dead-heat victory in the Ashland (gr. I) at Keeneland in her most recent start, would have the mount should Room Service makes her dirt debut in the Oaks.

Carl Pollard's Kiss Moon is scheduled to work five furlongs April 21 morning at 8:30 EDT with Julien Leparoux aboard for trainer David Vance.

The filly galloped Sunday after the renovation break with Otto Thorwarth aboard.

The Estate of Clarence Scharbauer Jr.'s homebred Fiftyshadesofgold jogged under exercise rider Sara Escudero early Sunday morning.

Trainer Bret Calhoun trains Fiftyshadesofgold, who has had two works here since finishing second in the March 29 Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II). According to assistant Tom Morgan, the filly is scheduled to work again April 25.

Charles Fipke's Unbridled Forever galloped after the renovation break under Pedro Velez for trainer Dallas Stewart.

Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Thank You Marylou exited her half-mile work in :49.80 April 19 at the Trackside Training Center well, according to trainer Mike Maker.
