Trainer Chad Brown seeks his fifth consecutive victory in the $100,000 Sweetest Chant Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies at one mile Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park. The late Allen Jerkens is the only other trainer who has won the race more than once.
Brown, whose streak includes victories by champion
Dayatthespa (2012),
Premier Steps (2013),
Ready to Act (2014), and
Consumer Credit (2015), will send out Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence's
Pricedtoperfection to chase the five-peat. The
Temple City filly failed to menace while racing wide in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT) last autumn, and then returned to run a very good second in the Ginger Brew Stakes, rallying from far back and wide.
Undefeated
Hidden Treat figures to make things tough for Brown. The speedy Lael Stables runner broke her maiden last year sprinting on the turf and then won the Sandpiper Stakes from a stalking position.
"I always thought she was a nice filly," said trainer Arnaud Delacour. "She has shown some potential. We tried her on the turf because I thought she was turf all along, and she won first time out. She did what we asked her to do, so that was great. I tried her on the dirt because she was breezing well and I didn't think the stake last month at Tampa came up too tough. I wanted to give her a shot and she won it
"That doesn't mean that she's a dirt filly but she can also go on the dirt," he added. "She's a Lemon Drop Kid, so I'd rather try to stretch her and run her like a mile on the turf. That would be more of her kind of thing. The dam (Maraschino Red) is by Medaglia d'Oro so everything is pointing to two turns with her."
Hidden Treat has raced on or near the lead in each of her two races, but Delacour doesn't feel she is limited by either style or distance. Paco Lopez will ride for the first time from post 11 as the co-highweight at 118 pounds.
There are stakes winners throughout the 12-horse field. Ontario-bred
Ami's Mesa has won both her career starts at
Woodbine, taking the Glorious Song Stakes with a late surge last year.
Andreya's Reward has already run in five added-money events and won the Our Dear Peggy Stakes at Gulfstream. She was seventh in the Ginger Brew but only 2 ½ lengths off the winner.
Spinamiss took a stakes event last year in Ireland and won her Stateside debut in allowance optional claiming company late last year.
Module rallied late to finish third, a head behind Pricetoperfection in the Ginger Brew and is on the improve. No turf stakes would be complete without a kitten, and
Sapphire Kitten deserves a long look here. She finished a neck back in second in the Jessamine Stakes (gr. IIIT) at
Keeneland and missed by just 1 ¼ lengths in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. She rallied to be third in the Wait A While Stakes.
Conquest Bebop must overcome the outside gate here but ran well over the Gulfstream lawn in her seasonal debut, a second in allowance optional claiming company. She finished immediately in front of
Gliding By in that one. Gliding By ran unplaced in the Juvenile Fillies Turf but her other two lifetime efforts have been solid.
