Hansel, at the ripe old age of 26, is the oldest living Preakness and Belmont winner. Raced by Joe Allbritton’s Lazy Lane Farms and trainer Frank Brothers, Hansel was the beaten favorite in the 1991 Kentucky Derby, finishing 10th behind Strike the Gold, but came back to win the Preakness by seven lengths, then get the measure of Strike the Gold by a head in the Belmont. The son of Woodman—Count On Bonnie, by Dancing Count, was bred in Virginia by Marvin Little Jr. and lives in Virginia at Lazy Lane. Allbritton died in 2012 at 87.
