Murray Stroud's Youcan'tcatchme, winner of the Etobicoke Handicap on the front end in her last start, wired the field again in the $148,882 Seaway Stakes (Can-III) on the Woodbine Polytrack Aug. 31 .
Ridden by Justin Stein for trainer Sam Di Pasquale, Youcan'tcatchme grabbed the early lead and never looked back en route to her fifth victory in 11 career starts in the seven-furlong test for fillies and mares. The 4-year-old filly has only raced on Woodbine's Polytrack.
Youcan'tcatchme was tracked early by Nikkis Smartypants, winner of the Royal North Stakes (Can-IIIT) on turf July 28, through early fractions of :23.27 for the opening quarter-mile and :46.37 for the half-mile. Nikkis Smartypants faded as Roxy Gap ranged up wide on the final turn, but the latter couldn't catch the leader while settling for second. Strike the Moon rallied for third.
Youcan'tcatchme ran six furlongs in 1:10.54 and completed the seven furlongs in 1:22.95. She defeated Roxy Gap, the reigning Canadian female sprint champion, by 1 1/2 lengths. Roxy Gap finished one length ahead of Strike the Moon.
The winner paid $6.40, $3.70, and $3. Roxy Gap returned $3.20 and $2.60, while Strike the Moon paid $3.30. The exacta paid $24.30 and the trifecta $56.70.
Youcan'tcatchme, bred in Florida by Strouds Lane Farm, is by The Daddy out of the Yankee Victor mare Poppy's Baby Girl. Earlier this year she finished second, beaten a neck, in the Ontario Fashion Stakes (Can-III).
