Champion Steeplechaser Flatterer Dies at 35

Flatterer, a four-time champion Steeplechase horse and at 35, the oldest living Eclipse Award winner and Thoroughbred Hall of Famer, died April 24 at owner Bill Pape's My Way Farm near Unionville, Pa.

He was a Pennsylvania-bred son of Mo Bay—Horizontal, by Nade.



Flatterer was bred by trainer Jonathan Sheppard and Pape. He compiled a career record of 24 wins, eight seconds, and five thirds from 52 starts, for earnings of $534,854. The multiple champion captured 13 steeplechase stakes events during his five seasons of racing, including the Colonial Cup Invitational four times, the Iroquois, National Hunt Cup, and Temple Gwathmey.



For the past 25 years, Flatterer resided at Pape's farm, where he did some dressage work. The dark bay or brown horse was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age and was buried in his pasture.
