Former Legislator to Head Indiana Regulator

Description:

Michael Smith, who served as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1993-2002, has been hired as executive director of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission.

The IHRC announced the hiring of Smith, who has been involved in horse racing since the 1960s, in a Feb. 1 letter to industry stakeholders. Smith, who began his new role Feb. 1, replaces Joe Gorajec, who was removed from the position in October.

The Feb. 1 letter said Smith owned Thoroughbreds with his father in the 1960s then moved into owning, training, and driving Standardbreds. He continues to maintain a license as a trainer and driver in the sport.

Smith's experience includes operating an insurance and investment firm and serving as president and chief executive officer of the Casino Association of Indiana. During his tenure in state government he was Republican floor leader.

"His hands-on background in horse racing coupled with his successful business experience and as a leader in the Indiana General Assembly make him uniquely qualified to lead the IHRC," said the letter signed by IHRC chairman Thomas Weatherwax.
