Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. This week's focus is Saturday’s Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes, a steppingstone to the Santa Anita Derby with the winner earning 10 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Bob Baffert, who trained last year’s Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, has the strong Lewis favorite in Mor Spirit, who was last seen winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity.
Baffert has won the Lewis in five of the last 16 years, including 2015 with Dortmund, who went on to finish third in the Kentucky Derby.
The 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another won the Lewis. Other notable recent winners include Candy Boy (2014), Caracortado (2010) and American Pharoah’s sire (father) Pioneerof the Nile (2009).
Mor Spirit is supposed to win this year’s Lewis, but Weinstein and Kristufek both have other ideas!
