49 Horses Confirmed With EHV in New Mexico

Description:

A recent update of the equine herpesvirus outbreak in New Mexico from the New Mexico Livestock Board revealed 49 horses have been confirmed to have the virus, 20 barns have been quarantined, and six horses have been euthanized.

Most of the horses are stabled at Sunland Park, which is still not allowing horses to enter or exit the facility, but three positive tests came from the nearby Frontera Training Center.

Beginning Feb. 5, a new training schedule will be employed at Sunland, with a session from 6-9 a.m. MST for non-quarantined barns and another from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for quarantined barns.

Earlier in the week, New Mexico State veterinarian Alexandra Eckhoff urged horsemen to continue to wash their hands before and after working with a horse; to disinfect clothing, footwear, buckets and other gear in contact with horses; to avoid walking through barns where they have no horses; and to take the temperature of their horses twice a day, because fever is often the first indicator of the virus' presence.
