Description:

Welcome to Los Ponies Longshots! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras – Los Ponies to those who follow him on Twitter – will provide two or three longshots at 8-to-1 odds or better on the morning line that he identifies as strong value bets. Contreras also will map out a betting strategy for how to play his selections and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back each week if you love a longshot!
Saturday, Race 9, Santa Anita Park, San Marcos Stakes, 7:13 p.m. ET
#9 Abbey Vale (8-1): He managed to finish a very good second place finish in his most recent start when closing from the back of the pack. He got into some traffic trouble, had to wait for some room and kicked on strongly at the end. He was running on turf labeled as good but I think he is much better over the firm course and that’s what we expect to have on Saturday afternoon.

#4 Maid Easy (8-1): She’s only made one start and that was back in December of 2014, where she only beat one horse while going off at odds of 5-1 in a much tougher race than this. There aren’t any standouts in this field and this this filly has some winning bloodlines in her pedigree. Although the layoff is a concern, this trainer does well with limited starters and it looks like this filly has been on a consistent workout schedule since January.
