Today marks the Chinese New Year and the beginning of the Year of the Monkey. Since one of the fun things in horse racing is coming up with a name for a horse, I decided to look up some horses that have “monkey” in their names. Here’s a few of them, with their sire (father) and dam (mother) listed in parentheses.
Thunder Monkey (Thunder Gulch - Mom’s Appeal)
This guy raced exclusively in Canada and broke his maiden in a stakes race. He later added an allowance victory to his resume but those were his only two wins in 26 starts.
No Monkey Bizness (Nobiz Like Shobiz - Slipshoe)
This is a colt that was bred in Kentucky and looks to be getting ready for the races. He recorded at three furlong workout at Highpoint Farm and Training Center last month.
Mr. Monkey Jones (Black Mambo - Pentera)
He began his career with back-to-back wins at Golden Gate fields and made a total of 26 starts, retiring with seven wins and nearly $200,000 in earnings.
Hunky Monkey (Matt’s Broken Vow - Gents Wild Glitter)
This colt was bred in Minnesota and is now a 2-year-old. There are no recorded workouts yet so we’ll have to wait and see if he shows up later down the road at Canterbury Park.
The Green Monkey (Forestry - Magical Masquerade)
The Green Monkey sold for a record $16 million as a 2-year-old colt at auction in 2006. His much-anticipated racing debut happened at Belmont Park in 2007, but he only managed to finished third as the heavy favorite. That ended up being his best finish ever as he later finished fourth in two consecutive starts before retiring. He never won a race and finished up with $10,440 in earnings. He’s currently a stallion in Florida and has sired many other “monkey” horses, including the six listed below.
Monkey Business (The Green Monkey - Preiyali)

Monkey Business is one of The Green Monkey's most successful racehorses. She has raced in Panama and last year captured the Panamanian filly Triple Crown.
The Pink Monkey (The Green Monkey - Senorina Valentina)
If you follow Pennsylvania racing then you might have seen this girl race. She made 18 career starts, all of them at Parx and Penn National, but she only managed to win once.
Ms. Green Monkey (The Green Monkey - Soldier’s Siren)
This filly has two wins in 13 career starts and was last seen running at Charles Town in September of last year.
Kinz Funky Monkey (The Green Monkey – Pretty Ready)

Another successful daughter of The Green Monkey, Kinz Funky Monkey won the Manhattan Beach Stakes and two other races in Southern California, earning over $200,000 in her 13-race career.
Millionaire Monkey (The Green Monkey - Polka Dot Miss)
He raced 35 times but sadly ended up about $980,000 short of being a millionaire because he only won three races in his career, earning $22,048 while racing only in Puerto Rico.
Monkey Money (The Green Monkey - Vanishing Wolf)
He won his career debut at Tampa Bay Downs in April 2015 but has failed to return to the winner’s circle since then. He was last seen racing at Gulfstream Park in September 2015.
