America’s Best Racing and BetAmerica team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.
Each week, handicapper and avid gambler Monique Vág will provide at least one “Best Bet” of the weekend, ideal for a win bet. The post also will include some combination of additional bets for the weekend.
For some posts, Vág will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet.
She also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.
Place your bets at BetAmerica, which prides itself on outstanding customer service combined with the safety and security of wagering with a reputable advance-deposit wagering platform.
This Weekend’s Bets
Best Bet
Saturday, Santa Anita Park, Race 3, Arcadia Stakes, 4:30 p.m. ET
#6 Obviously: Obviously has raced against some of the best milers, so there’s no surprise that this short-priced favorite will received a bulk of the betting money. He has some great gate speed and flaunts some really fast opening quarters. He will be forwardly placed and very likely uncontested. It’s his race to lose.
Best Bet
Saturday, Tampa Bay Downs, Race 10, Tampa Bay Stakes, 4:45 p.m. ET
#1 War Correspondent: Seemed to have needed a start last time out, after being having nearly 10 months off from racing. He reunites with John Velazquez, who was aboard in his most recent score in the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream. He has run some of his best races on the turf; clearly the one to beat in here.
Longshot Bet
Saturday, Santa Anita Park, Race 5, 5:40 p.m. ET
#4 Mining Diamonds: This filly had no chance last time out after having a poor break and racing on a sloppy track. Trainer Peter Miller removes her blinkers and she tries a new jockey in Brayan Pena. She exits a key race, where a couple of fillies went on to win and place in Grade 2 stakes. Give her last race a pass. She’s very capable in here at big odds.
Exacta Box
Sunday, Santa Anita Park, Race 8, Sweet Life Stakes, 7 p.m. ET
#3 How Unusual: This filly makes her career debut here in a downhill turf stakes sprint. The connections must like what they see to enter her in here. If she runs like her half-mile workout in :46.60 on Dec. 30, she should run away with this one.
#6 Uptown Twirl: Tries turf for the first time after winning her last start at Santa Anita Park on the dirt. Perhaps the intentions were to run her on the turf all along. This expensive auction purchase most likely will bid for a stalking trip with some fillies to her inside flashing early speed. I like how jockey Abel Lezcano stays on board.
#7 Jeremy’s Legacy: Draws inside of rival Swift Lady and will very likely take back and try an off-the-pace approach in here. She’s had graded stakes experience and seems best suited for a distance like the one she’s in today. Unlike many of the fillies in here, she has turf experience, a win on the grass and a second-place finish on this downhill turf course. I like her shot.
