Three-Alarm Fire in Suffolk Downs Barn Area

Description:
Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire in the track kitchen building at Suffolk Downs late afternoon and evening April 29.

There were no injuries to people or horses, Suffolk's chief operating officer Chip Tuttle said in a statement.

The blaze reportedly broke out at approximately 5 p.m. ET at the East Boston track, which is set to open its live meeting May 3, and Tuttle said that track officials expect to open on schedule and will confer with public safety officials.

The statement also said that as of 8:30 p.m., the Revere Fire Department reported that the fire was under control but it remains on site.

Television news photos showed flames and heavy smoke shooting through the roof of a large one-story building in the stable area, the Associated Press reported. WCVB-TV also reported horses were evacuated from some stables as a precaution.

"We want to thank the Revere Fire Department for the amazing work it did to contain the fire in the track kitchen building and to keep everyone safe," Tuttle said. "We also want to commend the quick thinking of the horsemen and women who moved the horses from the barns nearest the kitchen building to safety."

The track's stable area opened on Sunday, March 23 for training.
