The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues on Saturday with the $400,000, Grade 2 Veterans Ford Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds. Much like the Southwest Stakes last week, the Risen Star features a deep field of promising Derby hopefuls, making it a great betting race and a stern test for each runner.
Although the speedy Laoban (#9) is expected to scratch, the race does feature several front-runners in the form of Bistraya (#4), Its All Relevant (#7), and Candy My Boy (#13). These three runners have achieved recent victories with the aid of good trips against weaker competition. Given the size of the Risen Star field, the pace is very likely to be fast, which could compromise their chances while setting the race up for a closer. The long homestretch at Fair Grounds should also aid the late runners.
As a result, the following horses look like the key contenders for victory:
#2 Mo Tom: A classic closer, he’s been at the back of the pack in all five of his races to date, but that hasn’t stopped him from rallying to hit the board each time. After finishing third with a ground-saving trip in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, he produced a huge late run in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds to win by 2 ¼ lengths. He did get a good trip in the Lecomte — the pace was fast and the leaders were tiring in the homestretch — but he figures to be closing strongly again this Saturday.

#6 Gun Runner: This Steve Asmussen-trained colt could not have been much more impressive in his first two starts last year, winning both from a few lengths off the pace while showing no hesitation racing in between horses. In the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, he might not have cared for the sloppy track, but nevertheless made a strong bid to take a narrow lead in the homestretch before tiring late to finish fourth, just 1 ½ lengths behind Mo Tom and 3 ¼ lengths behind winner Airoforce. He has been training very well for his return, posting two fast six-furlong workouts since the beginning of February, and his excellent tactical speed could help him secure a great position and get first run at the leaders turning for home. I think he has a very big chance to win.
#8 Tom’s Ready: He stayed a bit closer to the fast pace in the Lecomte than victorious Mo Tom and had a clear lead in the homestretch before finishing second. He’s fairly versatile in terms of running style and must be respected, but he’s also been beaten by Mo Tom in all three of their meetings.
#10 Airoforce: He could be the favorite after winning three of his four starts last year, and he looked good beating Mo Tom and Gun Runner in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes to end the season. But that race was on a sloppy track, and he still hasn’t raced on a fast dirt track, a small but not insignificant question mark. Additionally, he’ll be carrying top weight of 122 pounds — conceding six pounds to Gun Runner — and he did have a slight training setback at the start of the month.
#12 Uncle Walter: He may have run the best race in the Lecomte Stakes, staying close to the fast pace and making the first move on the far turn before finishing third by three lengths. But he stayed on stubbornly in the homestretch and was gaining back some ground on Tom’s Ready in the final furlong. If he can settle farther back on Saturday and avoid losing too much ground, I think he could be a major contender to finish in the trifecta.
I’ll look to play these five horses in exactas and trifectas while adding #5 Forevamo and #13 Candy My Boy to the trifecta:

El Road to the Kentucky Derby continúa el sábado con el $400,000, Grado 2 Veterans Ford Risen Star Stakes en Fair Grounds. #6 Gun Runner: Este potro entrenado por Steve Asmussen pudo no haber estado muy brillante en sus primeras dos actuaciones del año pasado, ganando en ambas luego de venir unos cuantos cuerpos fuera del pleito, pero ha mostrado pocas dudas para abrirse paso al final entre sus rivales. En el Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, podría haberle afectado la pista barrosa, pero a pesar de ello hizo una fuerte movida tomando la delantera en la recta final antes de cansarse y finalizar cuarto, sólo 1 ½ cuerpos detrás de Mo Tom y 3 ¼ cuerpos detrás del ganador Airoforce. Ha estado entrenando muy bien para su retorno, registrando dos ejercicios muy rápidos sobre seis furlones desde el comienzo de Febrero, y su excelente velocidad táctica podría ayudarle a asegurar una buena posición y ser el primero en cargar a los líderes llegando a la recta final. Creo que tiene una gran chance para ganar.
#8 Tom’s Ready: Anduvo un poco más cerca del violento desarrollo del Lecomte, que el victorioso Mo Tom, y en la recta final tuvo un breve momento en la punta antes de finalizar segundo. Es bastante versátil en cuanto a estilo de correr y merece respeto, aunque digamos también que ha sido superado por Mo Tom en las tres veces que se han medido.
#10 Airoforce: Podría ser el favorito después de ganar tres de sus cuatro carreras el año pasado, y se le vio muy bien venciendo a Mo Tom y a Gun Runner en el Grado 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes terminando la temporada. Pero esa carrera fue en pista fangosa, y todavía no ha participado en una pista de arena rápida, una interrogante pequeña pero no insignificante. Adicionalmente, estará lomeando el peso más alto de 122 libras — concediendo seis libras a Gun Runner — y tuvo un pequeño impase en su entrenamiento a comienzos de mes.
#12 Uncle Walter: Tal vez corrió su mejor carrera en el Lecomte Stakes, permaneciendo cerca de los punteros y haciendo la primera movida en la recta del frente antes de finalizar tercero a tres cuerpos. Se mantuvo tercamente en la recta final y fue recuperando terreno acercándose a Tom’s Ready en el furlón final.
