Dressing for the Fountain of Youth on a Budget

Description:

The Fountain of Youth Stakes is a major stop in the Triple Crown trail. Held at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. on Feb. 27, the winner of the Fountain of Youth earns 50 points and a practically guaranteed spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby on May 7.
If you’re in South Florida that weekend, the place to see and be seen is Gulfstream Park, so I put together three affordable and fashionable looks each for men and women planning a day at the races. No piece in any set costs more than $50; and if you want to shop the look, simply click on the image and follow the links to make a purchase.! I listed the ladies’ three looks first and the menswear below those.
Ready? Let’s hit it!

I love a monotone palate for the races, especially one that’s punctuated with an unexpected pop of color. This gray, black and white dress ($30, Zaful) is a perfect frock for the track, and I paired it with a pair of silver sandals for $20 by Splendid and a silver fascinator for $13 by AM Clothes. A $16 hammered silver cuff makes a statement, and the black-and-silver Novica earrings for $40 are sophisticated and subtle. The $41 Pieces handbag adds that unexpected color, which is mimicked by the lenses of the $20 Pop Map shades. Finish off the look with a swipe of $17 MAC lipstick in Bombshell, and you’re off to the races for a total of $197 from feet to fascinator!

How sweet is this patterned romper for $23 by ASOS? I love that it comes with the bright scarlet belt, which I matched to this NYFashion101 fascinator for $28. I accessorized with this cobalt clutch for $30 by Ilishop, a pair of tasseled wedges for just $7.95 by Go Jane, a pair of metallic sunnies for $12 by zeroUV and a $23 oversized watch from Forever21. This whole look is yours for a total of $123.95!

I will be the first to admit that sometimes it’s so much fun to embrace the old-school glamour of horse racing through fashion, and my third look for the Fountain of Youth definitely embodies that vintage vibe. The stunning circle skirt is $40 by Chichwish, and I would tuck this canary tank for $25 from H&M in to show off the construction of the skirt’s waist. Add a pair of $24 DV by Doce Vita espadrilles, a $37 Relaxfeel opalescent handbag with a vintage-style jewel detail, and a $14 charm bracelet by Junior BP; then make the look perfect for the races with this wide-brim navy hat for $35 by SK Hat Shop. All in all, this look comes together for $175, which should leave you with a little extra cash to play the ponies!
On to the menswear! Below are three looks that are perfect for an afternoon taking in the Kentucky Derby preps at Gulfstream Park.

As my colleague Dan Tordjman will tell you, a bowtie is always the perfect accessory at the track. This classic, blue version is $21 by Saddlebred, and I paired it with an English Laundry gingham dress shirt for $46 and a pair of linen pants (which will keep you cool in the South Florida sun!) for $49 from J. Crew Factory. A classic brown belt for $20 by Perry Ellis, a pair of boat shoes (J's Awake, $38) and a $50 Swiss Legend watch all offset the look, and finish everything off with some wooden-framed sunglasses for $9.99 from H&M. All together, this look will run you $233.99.

If you want to keep it a little more casual but still look sharp, try a crisp pair of dark-wash jeans ($20, H&M) with a fitted shirt with contrasting cuffs for $17 by Coofandy. The statement timepiece is $50 by MN Watches, and the reversible belt is just $20 by Robert Graham Posner. Finish everything off with a killer pair of Adidas sneakers for $40 and a pair of aviator shades for $19 by Pop Map, and you’re ready to go for just $166!

Want to dress to impress? Then rock a suit designed for warm weather. This US Polo Association version (which includes both the jacket and pants, so I’m counting each piece as being less than $50) is just $55. The solid oxford ($20, Black Brown 1826) beautifully offsets the Bergen-check tie for $40 by 1901. I added a fun pair of argyle socks from Unsimply Stitched for $12, then finished the look with a pair of $48 Giorgio Brutini loafers and some classic wire-and-tortoiseshell sunglasses for $9.99 by H&M. From head to toe, this whole ensemble totals at $184.99.
