Mohaymen wins Holy Bull Stakes

Shadwell Stable's undefeated Mohaymen worked an easy half-mile Feb. 19 in his final work for the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.

Considered by many the top 3-year-old prospect on the East Coast, the Tapit   colt went :49 3/5 on the main track at Palm Meadows Training Center. Regular exercise rider Miguel Jaime was up for the work, Mohaymen's second since his Jan. 30 win in the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (gr. II).

In his previous work Mohaymen went a half-mile in :47 4/5.

"We know he's fast, but we don't need 47's every week," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. "He went great. He started out a little slow, going :13 and 3 the first eighth of a mile and finished (three furlongs) in :35 and 4 and kept going after it.

"We don't need to go fast every week. He looked great doing it and galloped out well, (five furlongs) in 1:01 and 3. All is well. We're ready for next week."

Other horses pointing to Feb. 27 Fountain of Youth are Awesome Banner, three-for-three lifetime with wins in the Hutcheson (gr. III) and Swale (gr. II) stakes; Awesome Speed, winner of three straight capped by the Mucho Macho Man Stakes; and recent Gulfstream allowance winners Cherry Wine and unbeaten Zulu.
