Hernandez, Rosario to Hospital After Spill

Description:

Jockeys Rafael Hernandez and Joel Rosario were transported to a local hospital after a chain-reaction spill in the Melody of Colors Stakes Feb. 20 at Gulfstream Park that saw two horses fall and four jockeys unseated in the stretch.

The incident began in the stretch of the five-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies when Brandy's Girl clipped heels with More Royalty and fell. Rafael Hernandez, the rider aboard Brandy's Girl, was thrown. The chart notes said Brandy's Girl was vanned off.

Kandoo, with jockey Joel Rosario aboard, fell over the fallen Brandy's Girl. Gulfstream reported that Kandoo was euthanized.

Hi Holiday, with Edgard Zayas up, and My Dear Venezuela, with Luis Saez aboard, were both able to jump over the fallen fillies. Zayas and Saez where thrown from their mounts but avoided serious injury.

As for the race outcome, Richard and Bertram Klein's Cash Back avoided the trouble racing inside in the stretch and angled out in mid-stretch to register a 1 3/4-length victory over More Royalty. Cash Back, by Congrats, improved her record to three-for-three in her stakes debut.
