Frey Injured in Golden Gate Spill

Description:

Eclipse Award-winning rider Kyle Frey suffered hematomas and crush injuries to his muscles covering his femur and humerus during a fifth-race spill Feb. 20 at Golden Gate Fields.

Frey's mount Pure Comedy led in the stretch when he ducked out under left-handed urging. Frey was unseated and then was struck by a trailing horse.

The jockey was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland where the 24-year-old underwent CT scans that revealed his injuries.

Frey, the 2011 Eclipse Award winner for outstanding apprentice, is third in the winter-spring meet jockey standings with 23 wins.
