2 Guys and a Crown: Fountain of Youth Stakes

Description:

Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. This week's focus is Saturday’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, a steppingstone to the Florida Derby with the winner earning 50 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Saturday's $400,000 Fountain of Youth is the final major stepping stone to the Florida Derby and it features the undefeated Mohaymen, who many have tabbed as the early Kentucky Derby favorite.
In the last 25 years, six horses who ran in Fountain of Youth have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby with the most recent being race winner Orb in 2013.
The last several years the Fountain of Youth has been a coming out party for many horses. In fact, six of the last eight race winners won a mere Gulfstream Park allowance race in their start prior. Zulu fits that profile this year.
Zulu's trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez have both enjoyed much success in the Fountain of Youth. Pletcher has won three of last nine editions of the Fountain of Youth, including last year's race with Itsaknockout (via disqualification of Upstart) and Velazquez has captured four of the last nine runnings.
