The $400,000, Grade 1 Man o’ War Stakes is simply one of the best American turf races in the game. The name of the race alone evokes images of class and grace. It has been a showcase for greatness, with the legendary Secretariat owning the record for the fastest time ever in the race, when it was run at 1 ½ miles.
Today, it’s run at a slightly shorter distance of 1 3/8 miles.
In recent years, the Man o’ War Stakes has featured repeat winners such as Gio Ponti (2009-2010) and With Anticipation (2001-02). This year, there aren’t any horses with a shot at repeating but the owner-trainer tandem of the Phipps Stable and Shug McGaughey has a chance to pull off a three-peat. The team has won the last two editions of the Man o’ War with Boisterous (2013) and Point of Entry (2012).

In the 2014 Man o’ War, Phipps and McGaughey will send out Imagining, a graded stakes-winning son of Giant’s Causeway out of the A.P. Indy mare, Daydreaming. Not only does Imagining have an all-star team behind him and on top of him - in the form of Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Joel Rosario - he also has quite the résumé on the Belmont Park turf. Imagining has won four races and placed in another from seven starts on the grass at Belmont. He’s also 1-for-1 at this 1 3/8-mile distance.

The only other horse who has fared better at the distance is Amira’s Prince. Bred, and originally raced, in Ireland, this 5-year-old was unbeatable in his first four races after arriving in the U.S. in late 2012. But 2014 hasn't been as kind to Amira’s Prince. It started when he finished third behind Lochte and Imagining in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, a race that aired on The Jockey Club Tour of Fox Sports 1.
Amira’s Prince followed with a better effort, rallying to finish second by a neck in the Mervin Muniz Handicap. A little more distance (that race was run at a 1 1/8 miles - or a quarter-mile shorter than the Man o’ War) and Amira’s Prince might have won that race.
Another intriguing horse in this race is Lucayan. One of three European-bred horses in the race (Amira’s Prince and Grandeur both were bred in Ireland), this product of France can certainly fly late. We saw a change of tactics from him last time out, when he was nearer to the pace in the San Luis Rey Stakes. Typically, he’s been reserved off the pace before unleashing a late surge to grab a large share of the purse money. His only recent no-shows came when running at a shorter distance or on wet turf. Firm turf and some additional ground to cover might just be what the doctor ordered.
Given the size of the field and the quality of the top contenders, this race shapes up as very challenging from the perspective of a handicapper looking for value - especially when we throw in the added parameter of a $20 budget. Yet, I feel pretty good about the chances of my top two selections.
So, we’ll go with a few simple strategies that, while locking ourselves in to just two horses, could still pay pretty well.
