Sometimes you don’t a need rainbow to find a pot of gold waiting for you at the racetrack.
One highly fortunate Pick 6 player at Aqueduct on March 4 broke the bank and moved into a new tax bracket thanks to a $217,478 payday for submitting the lone winning ticket on the final six races of the day.
The six-figure sequence started on a high note when Who Is the Giant stood tall after 11 unplaced starts and broke his maiden in the fourth race at a $32.20 win price.
A flurry of fairly logical victors followed with wins by Distinctive Lady ($7.60), Froyo Star ($9.30), Lady Luciano ($9.30) and the favored Midnight Champagne ($5.50).
That left it to Fratello Del Nord to make one person deliriously happy as the 4-year-old was primed and ready for his first start since October and notched a maiden victory at 21-1 odds to seal the deal on the gargantuan payoff.

At Gulfstream Park, where the Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot carryover rocketed past $2.5 million for the holder of a single winning ticket, several Pick 6 players had to share the payoff on March 5, but they still had plenty of reasons to celebrate, namely $38,629.04 of them for each 20-cent wager.
That sequence took a while to heat up, with a pair of favorites in Air Squadron ($4.80) and Farz ($6.20) followed by Riddler at an $11.40 mutuel. Together those three formed a $58.50 Pick 3 for a $1 wager.
The final three races added the zest to the mix with victories by Blofeld ($21.40), Grand Tito ($20.40) and Kings Knight ($28.60). They comprised a $1,678 Pick 3 for $1 and provided a rather ritzy consolation for missing out on the “rainbow.”
Gulfstream’s Pick 5 that day also provided a rewarding payoff of $24,120.85 for a 50-cent ticket.
At Santa Anita Park on March 5, the eighth race featured a parade of longshots and a hefty superfecta payoff.
Songforjohnmichael, who had won two straight races in October 2014, did not allow a 16-month layoff to divert him from the winner’s circle as he posted a 2 ½-length win at 21-1 odds ($44.40 to win).
Horses priced at 10-1, 13-1 and 15-1 followed and holders of that winning 1-9-5-10 combination saw $20,294.50 pour into their wallets for each $1 bet.
Mahoning Valley was the site for this week’s presentation of the “How did you come up with that one?” award.
Handicappers were understandably cool to Finn B Cool in the fifth race on Feb. 29. After all, the 4-year-old filly headed into the maiden claimer with a 0-for-19 record and had finished 11th and 9th in her last two races while losing by a combined 37 ¼ lengths.
Beyond that, she was taking a jump in class from a $5,000 claimer to a $15,000 claimer, though she was cutting back in distance from 5 ½ furlongs to 4 ½.
With a trainer and jockey who were a combined 0-for-37 when she was entered in the race, her 50-1 morning-line odds actually seemed low in comparison to her chances in the races.
Handicappers surely felt that way about Finn B Cool as they dismissed her at 88-1 odds.
Though she had showed early speed and tired in most of her starts, the 4 ½-furlong distance resonated with her as she grabbed an early lead, fell behind by a head at the eighth pole but then showed heretofore unseen resiliency in battling back and defeated a 31-1 shot by a neck.
The payoff for folks who were not fazed by all those 0-fers was a massive $179.60 for a $2 win ticket.
The exacta with that 31-1 shot checked in at $604.80 and the triple with a 3-1 shot in the final slot paid $2,079.15 for a 50-cent ticket.
The Pick 3 capped by “Finn” returned $1,962.75.
All in all, some pretty cool payoffs.
RAINBOW PICK 6 JACKPOT UPDATE: For those handicappers seeking a payoff of more than $2 million in Gulfstream Park’s Rainbow Pick 6, the carryover stands at $2,635,571.30 heading into Wednesday’s card at the Hallandale, Fla. track.
