Mohaymen, Chrome Top First NTRA Polls

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association released week one of the 2016 NTRA Top 3-year-old poll and top  3-year-old poll March 7, covering racing performance through March 6. Rankings are based on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis with first-place votes in parenthesis. Voting is from racing media and industry insiders.



In the 3-year-old poll, Shadwell Racing's Mohaymen outpointed juvenile champion male Nyquist 23-13 in first-place votes and 420-400 in overall tabulation. Mor Spirit (two first-place votes) is third with unbeaten filly Songbird fourth (with six first-place votes). Shadwell's Shagaf, winner of the March 5 Gotham Stakes (gr. II) ranks fifth.

The 3-year-old poll represents horses competing up and through the Triple Crown Championships. Poll concludes June 12.



In the Top Thoroughbred Poll, 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome   is atop the first poll with Donn Handicap (gr. I) winner Mshawish in second. Both figure to start next in the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 26 at Meydan Race Course.



Beholder, last year's champion older female ranks third with Frosted, who also is in training in Dubai, ranked fourth. Hoppertunity, also under consideration for the World Cup, ranks ninth. Songbird outpolled Mohaymen in the overall poll, coming in fifth.
