Making Money Betting Favorites in the San Felipe (Tambien en Español)

In all honesty, I can’t remember the last time a Kentucky Derby prep race drew a more evenly matched or impressive field than the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes scheduled to be run on March 12 at Santa Anita Park. All seven runners are coming off of excellent performances that have stamped them as legitimate contenders for the Kentucky Derby, and you can make a strong case for each and every horse in the race.
First and foremost is Bob Baffert’s Mor Spirit (#3), who has posted back-to-back wins in the Los Alamitos Futurity and Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Although he didn’t win either race by much, on both occasions he gave me the impression that he had a lot left in the tank and could have run faster if necessary. As a closer in a race with a fair amount of speed, he should get a nice setup and figures to be difficult to beat.
If there’s going to be an upset, Exaggerator (#7) might be the one to pull it off. The son of Curlin compiled an excellent record as a 2-year-old, winning the Saratoga Special and the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes, and he opened 2016 with an impressive runner-up effort behind champion Nyquist in the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes. I have long felt that Exaggerator is among the most talented colts of his generation, and given how well he’s trained since the San Vicente, I think he’s ready to take a step forward on Saturday. I would not be surprised to see him win.
In terms of sheer potential, Cupid (#4)—Mor Spirit’s stablemate—is one of the most intriguing horses in the race. After starting his career with two defeats in sprint races, Cupid tackled an 8.5-furlong maiden race on Feb. 7 at Santa Anita and won in spectacular fashion, settling a couple lengths behind a slow pace before unleashing a terrific burst of acceleration to win by 5 ¼ lengths. He looks like a seriously talented horse that could make a big impact in his stakes debut.

Smokey Image (#6) deserves a ton of respect after going unbeaten in his first six starts, and his last race—an effortless 9 ½-length triumph in the California Cup Derby—was impressive. The big question is whether he can beat horses of this caliber, as the field for the San Felipe is by far the strongest that he has faced to date. I won’t be surprised if he wins (I actually wouldn’t be altogether surprised to see any of these horses win the race!), but I’ll look to play against him for the top spot.
The speedy trio of Uncle Lino (#1), Danzing Candy (#2), and I Will Score (#5) could all make their presence felt on the front end. Of the three, I narrowly prefer I Will Score, who showed tremendous early speed in his first two starts (both victories) before finishing a close third behind Mor Spirit and Uncle Lino in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. I think I Will Score can improve in his second start around two turns, and if a strong pace shapes up, he could actually benefit from setting faster fractions than in the Lewis, where he couldn’t out-kick his rivals when the race turned into a sprint for home.

En honor a la verdad, no puedo recordar la última vez que una carrera preparatoria para el Kentucky Derby nos trajera un grupo tan parejo o impresionante que el del $400,000 San Felipe Stakes programado a correrse el 12 de Marzo en Santa Anita Park. Todos los siete participantes vienen de hacer excelentes actuaciones que los han calificado como contendientes legítimos para el Kentucky Derby, y cada uno de ellos tiene grandes argumentos en la carrera. 
Primeramente y para comenzar está el de Bob Baffert, Mor Spirit (#3), quien viene de triunfos consecutivos en Los Alamitos Futurity y el Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Aunque no ganó por demasiado esas carreras, en ambas ocasiones me dio la impresión de que tenía resto en el tanque y que podía haber corrido más rápido si hubiera sido necesario. Como atropellador en una carrera con una decente cantidad de velocidad, debe conseguir un desarrollo apropiado y parece que será muy difícil de vencer. 
Si es que va a haber un golpe, Exaggerator (#7) podría ser el encargado. El hijo de Curlin ha reunido un excelente récord como dos añero, ganando el Saratoga Special y el Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes, y abrió el 2016 con un impresionante placé llegando detrás del campeón Nyquist en los siete furlones del San Vicente Stakes. Hace mucho que creo que Exaggerator está entre los más talentosos potros de su generación, y viendo lo bien que está entrenando desde el San Vicente, pienso que está listo para dar un paso adelante el sábado. No me sorprendería verlo ganando.

Smokey Image (#6) merece una tonelada de respeto después de haber estado invicto en sus seis primeras salidas, y su última carrera—un cómodo triunfo por 9 ½-cuerpos en el California Cup Derby—fue llamativa. La gran interrogante es si él puede vencer a caballos de este calibre, ya que el lote del San Felipe es de lejos el más poderoso que él ha enfrentado hasta la fecha. No estaré sorprendido si es que gana (¡realmente no estaría del todo sorprendido de ver ganar a cualquiera de los caballos de esta carrera!), pero trataré de jugar en su contra para el primer lugar. 
El veloz trío de Uncle Lino (#1), Danzing Candy (#2), y I Will Score (#5) podrían todos hacer sentir su presencia en el frente del grupo. De los tres, preferiría ajustadamente a I Will Score, quien mostró tremenda ligereza inicial en sus primeras dos actuaciones (ambas victoriosas) antes de finalizar en un cercano tercer puesto detrás de Mor Spirit y Uncle Lino en el Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Creo que I Will Score puede superarse en su segunda actuación sobre dos curvas, y si el trámite se hace ligero, podría realmente beneficiarse marcando parciales más rápidos que en el Lewis, donde no pudo desprenderse de sus rivales cuando todos comenzaron a apurar hacia la meta.
