Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. Today Churchill Downs announcer Travis Stone stands in for Bram Weinstein, and they focus on Saturday’s Grade 2, $350,000 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby where the winner earns 50 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Run at 1 1/16 miles over the main track, the Tampa Bay Derby is a 50-20-10-5 points race on the road to the Kentucky Derby. Ten horses are entered, including the top three from the locally run Sam F. Davis—Destin, Rafting and Morning Fire.
Five of the last 10 Tampa Bay Derby winners ran in the Sam F. Davis in their start prior, but did not win that race. Trainer Todd Pletcher, who has sent some big guns to this race in the past including Verrazano in 2013 and Carpe Diem last year, saddles both Destin and the upstart Outwork on Saturday. Brody's Cause and Riker, third and sixth respectively in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, will make their seasonal debuts in the Tampa Bay Derby.
In 2007, Street Sense won Tampa Bay Derby en route to a victory in the Kentucky Derby, and Super Saver ran third in 2010 Tampa Bay Derby before eventually winning the Kentucky Derby. Most of the recent Tampa Bay Derby winners are Florida-based horses who want to avoid the big guns at Gulfstream.
