Mohaymen

Mohaymen and Nyquist were the clear individual horses while "all others" remained strong when betting in Pool 3 of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed March 13.

Shadwell Stable's unbeaten Fountain of Youth (gr. II) winner Mohaymen was the 7-2 favorite, but a flurry of late wagering on the mutuel field or "all others," pushed the odds on that betting interest down to 5-1 at the pool's close.

Reddam Racing's unbeaten champion Nyquist, winner of the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and San Vicente (gr. II) in his only start of 2016, was the second choice throughout the pool until his odds drifted up to his closing position as the 7-1 third choice.

A total of $328,108 was wagered in the KDFW Pool 3 when betting concluded at 6 p.m. ET. Overall betting in the pool included $220,331 in win betting and exacta wagering of $107,777.

Total wagering through the first three pools of the 2016 Kentucky Derby Future Wager stands at $943,991. The bet's fourth and final pool is set for April 1-3.

Todd Pletcher-trained Destin, a 30-1 risk in Churchill handicapper Mike Battaglia's KDFW Pool 3 morning line, saw his final odds drop to 15-1 after he edged stablemate Outwork to win the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.

Later that day Danzing Candy, also listed at 30-1 in the morning line, held off Mor Spirit and Exaggerator in the San Felipe (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park, after which his odds slid to a closing price of 17-1 on Sunday.

Surgical Strike, who is not yet nominated to the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown, won the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park, the weekend's remaining significant Kentucky Derby prep. Despite his loss, the Bob Baffert-trained Mor Spirit was Pool 3's fourth betting choice at 12-1. Outlook and Surgical Strike were included in the "all others" wager in Pool 3.

Other horses that attracted significant Pool 3 betting support included Suddenbreakingnews, winner of the Southwest (gr. III) at Oaklawn Park, who closed at 14-1; Gotham (gr. III) winner Shagaf, another 14-1 Derby Futures risk; and the New Orleans-based Mo Tom, winner of the $100,000 Lecomte (gr. III) and a troubled third in the Risen Star (gr. II) who closed at 15-1.

Launched by Churchill Downs in 1999, the KDFW enables fans of the Kentucky Derby to wager on contenders for its 2016 running well in advance of the race at odds that could be much more attractive than those available on Derby Day. Each Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool permits $2 minimum win bets and $2 exacta wagers, with the latter also available in $1 minimum increments in boxes and other multiple number configurations.

No scratches or refunds of wagers are permitted in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. If it is determined during any KDFW pool that a wagering interest will not be able to participate in the Kentucky Derby, wagering on that interest will be suspended immediately.

Final odds and $2 win and exacta will-pays, along with other information on the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby are available online at the official Kentucky Derby event web site at www.KentuckyDerby.com.
