Once again last week, no one managed to construct the single winning ticket for Gulfstream Park’s Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot.
Yet that didn’t stop a few handicappers from taking home a rather delectable six-figure payoff for correctly picking five winners.
To be precise, the bank was busted at Gulfstream on March 12 when the Pick 5 on the final five races of the day returned a monstrous $109,524.25 for a mere 50-cent wager.
The sequence did not gain serious traction until the final three races as it opened with wins by Martini Kid ($11) and Conquest Typhoon ($8.40).
But then Minute Madness ($63.40) rebounded from a 29-length loss at Tampa Bay Downs to notch a maiden win at 30-1 odds and Miss Matzoball ($20.20) took the $75,000 Captiva Island Stakes. Finally, first-time starter Forced Motion captured her debut for trainer Gilberto Zerpa at 31-1 odds and returned $64.40 in the final race of the day.
Aside from the gargantuan Pick 5 payoff, putting together the final three longshots in the Pick 3 or Pick 4 was extremely rewarding. The Pick 3 returned $13,561.50 for $1 while the Pick 4 was worth $14,762.85 for a 50-cent bet.

Though there were multiple winning tickets on the March 11 Pick 6 at Gulfstream Park, those fortunate enough to correctly select all six winners were treated to a spectacular reward of $89,381.02 for a winning 20-cent wager.
That sequence featured only one winning favorite as it started with wins by Super Bird ($14.20), Keystoneforvictory ($7.40), Second Mate ($11.80), Apologynotaccepted ($10.20) and Seeking Alpha ($5). Even though the winner of the final leg was the improbable drop-down Gran Tepuy at a $105.20 mutuel, the hopes of a single winning ticket gave away to several winners who each headed home nearly $90,000 richer.
The March 12 card at Gulfstream got off to an electric start when Sunset District won the opening race at $18.60 and then was followed by horses priced at 7-1, 22-1, 31-1 and 8-5 to comprise a Super High 5 that paid $55,681.10 for a $1 bet.
The week’s “How did you come up with that one?” award was presented in the eighth race at Santa Anita Park on March 13.
In no less of a setting than the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes, Generosidade, in just her fourth start in the United States, was sent off at 71-1 after finishing sixth, seventh and seventh in that trio of American starts. But on this day, the fourth start was the charm as the 7-year-old mare kicked into high gear in the stretch and posted a length and a half victory.
Aside from a week’s best payoff of $144.80 for a $2 win bet, Generosidade triggered some huge payoffs in the exotic wagers associated with that race.
The topper was the $1 superfecta which also featured horses at odds of 10-1, 30-1 and 10-1 to form a mammoth $87,409.60 superfecta for a $1 wager. There was also a trifecta worth $6,197 and a Pick 3 in that race which paid a robust $2,897.60.
CARRYOVER UPDATE: That aforementioned Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot at Gulfstream Park now has a carryover of $3,256,830.56 heading into Wednesday’s program at the Florida track. If no one hits the Jackpot in the next two weeks, there will be a mandatory payoff on March 26.
At Santa Anita, there will be a two-day carryover of $548,670 awaiting Pick 6 players on Thursday.
