Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. This week's focus is Saturday’s Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel Stakes, where the winner earns 50 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Run at 1 1/16 miles, the $900,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. is a 50-20-10-5 points race on the road to the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Bob Baffert, who saddles Cupid this year, has won five on the last six editions of the Rebel (American Pharoah '15, Hoppertunity '14, Secret Circle '12, The Factor '11 and Lookin at Lucky '10), with another Hall of Famer in D. Wayne Lukas taking the other renewal during this time span (Will Take Charge '13). Besides the Baffter contingent, other recent racing superstars to win the Rebel include Curlin ('07) and Lawyer Ron ('06).
Horses to bag the Rebel/Kentucky Derby double: Smarty Jones (2004) and American Pharoah (2015).
Half of the field of 14 last raced in the locally run Southwest Stakes (Grade 3) including the top three from that race in Suddenbreakingnews, Whitmore and American Dubai. Four of last ten Rebel winners ran in the Southwest in their race prior, but the rest have exited various other events.
