Wise Dan Recovering Well After Surgery

Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan came through the night in good order and was recovering well from emergency colic surgery, trainer Charlie LoPresti reported May 17.
Morton Fink's homebred 7-year-old gelded son of Wiseman's Ferry was taken to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington the morning of May 16 after he began to exhibit signs of discomfort following a routine gallop. He underwent surgery to correct a flip in a portion of the small intestine and came out of the operation performed by Dr. Scott Hopper without complications.

"Dr. Hopper said he's been absolutely great all through the night; he's been pounding his hay net and they're going to start feeding him a little bit," LoPresti reported. "They said he's really great, he's back to his old self.
"I can tell you when I saw him last night, if I didn't know he'd had colic surgery, I would have never known it. The thing is now as long as he doesn't have a reocurrence, he'll be all right. But they're going to start feeding him and if everything went right, (he) should be back to me in four to five days."
LoPresti is still deciding where he will take Wise Dan following the 10-time grade I winner's release from the Lexington clinic. He could go back to the trainer's base at Keeneland or could continue his recovery at LoPresti's Forest Lane Farm first.
"Where I'll take him, I'm still deciding," LoPresti said. "I have to let them tell me if he can hand graze or not."
