Land Over Sea
Reddam Racing's Land Over Sea, who has finished second to undefeated champion Songbird in her past two races, is scheduled to arrive in Louisiana March 21 for the $400,000 TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) March 26.
Trainer Doug O'Neill told officials at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots that the 3-year-old filly by Bellamy Road and half sister to War Story will be ridden by John Velazquez in the Fair Grounds Oaks. In her previous start, Land Over Sea finished second behind Songbird, the 2015 champion 2-year-old filly, in the March 5 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
Land Over Sea, a $130,000 purchase at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. April spring sale of 2-year-olds in training, broke her maiden in her second start at Del Mar last summer and since then has finished behind Songbird in five starts.
Last year she finished third and second, respectively, behind the champion filly in the Del Mar Debutante and Chandelier Stakes (both gr. I), and then checked in seventh behind Songbird in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I). This year, before the Santa Ysabel, Land Over Sea finished second to Songbird in the Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. II) in early February.
The 1 1/16-mile Oaks is one of several stakes on the March 26 program that features the $1 million TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (gr. II).
