America’s Best Racing and BetAmerica team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.
Each week, handicapper and avid gambler Monique Vág will provide at least one “Best Bet” of the weekend, ideal for a win bet. The post also will include some combination of additional bets for the weekend.
For some posts, Vág will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet.
She also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.
Place your bets at BetAmerica, which prides itself on outstanding customer service combined with the safety and security of wagering with a reputable advance-deposit wagering platform.
This Weekend’s Bets
Best Bet
Saturday, Race 2, Oaklawn Park, 2:38 p.m. ET
#1 Wrath of Ruthie: This filly was a super expensive $650,000 purchase and in her debut she looked worth every penny. She’ll be on the lead in a race lacking speed and meets a pretty weak group of $40,000 allowance optional claimers. Unlike her last race, I don’t see much pressure upfront. At post time, I expect her to go off somewhere around the 2-5 odds range, but the other races in the Pick 5 sequence look tricky; perhaps consider her a single in the early sequence.
Best Bet
Saturday, Race 7, Oaklawn Park, 5:21 p.m. ET
#7 Untapable: She hasn’t raced since October after she was scratched from the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Of course I have questions about how fit she is and if she’s ready first start off a layoff to go a mile and a sixteenth, but she’s by far the most accomplished in here. Hoping for honest fractions upfront because there’s no doubt #1 Call Pat will be closing late.
Longshot Play
Sunday, Race 5, Sunland Park, 5:23 p.m. ET
#4: Infinite Bull: Lots to like about this gelding: he’s won four of seven at Sunland Park, usually breaks clean and takes to the front (at six furlongs, I’m never going to complain about that!) He may have needed a start in his 2016 debut after being out for nearly a year. He’ll be on the lead and I like his chances to wire the field in here at a pretty nice price.
Exacta Box
Sunday, Race 8, Sunland Park, Harry Henson Handicap, 6:57 p.m. ET
#4 She’s Reddy: She’s coming off a six-length victory in an allowance last time out going the same distance. She’s been racing against much better at Santa Anita Park and Del Mar. With a decent break, she should be involved early. I like that she doesn’t need the lead to win but it will certainly help in here.
#7 Tiger Moth: This Todd Pletcher and Javier Castellano filly will surely get a good portion of the wagering money based on her connections alone. Racing wise, I think she’ll fare best sitting off the pace and making her move in the stretch. She is clearly better suited past six furlongs and poses a serious win threat.
#10 Diez Dancer: She debuts for new connections and a trainer who shows good numbers first time out with a new runner. Last start was bad, but it was on the synthetic … I’ll give her a pass for that. Lots to like: the mile distance, she can flash good speed, she likes to win. I think she has the potential to surprise in a pretty wide open stakes race.
