Making the Grade: Strong Mandate (también en español)

Making the Grade, which will run through the 2014 Belmont Stakes, focuses on the winners of the big races, usually from the previous weekend, who could impact the next Triple Crown. We’ll be taking a close look at impressive winners and evaluating their chances to win classic races based upon ability, running style, connections (owner, trainer, jockey) and pedigree.
This week we take a closer look at Strong Mandate, winner of the Hopeful Stakes on Sept. 2 at Saratoga Race Course.

Labor Day weekend is usually far too early to peg a 2-year-old as a legitimate hopeful for the following year’s Triple Crown races, but Hopeful Stakes winner Strong Mandate has quite a bit going for him as we approach the key fall prep races for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. In this week’s edition of Making the Grade, we’ll explore why Strong Mandate is a strong contender for not only the Juvenile but also the 2014 Kentucky Derby. 
Ability: Strong Mandate was never a factor in his career debut and finished a nonthreatening fifth, but frequently a career debut is really just a learning experience for a green 2-year-old with only a mild idea of what is expected from him. That one race can sometimes be an eye-opener for a young horse and it looks like the light bulb went on for Strong Mandate after that race. Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said adding blinkers also helped Strong Mandate.
“I like to give all my horses a race without blinkers and let them get dirt in their face and go through the whole drill. I didn't want them all to get left at the gate like they have all season long,” Lukas said. “Second out, you'll see all my horses come with blinkers and usually improve, if they've got some ability.”
Strong Mandate got away to a much better start and controlled the tempo in a 6 ½-furlong race on Aug. 17 at Saratoga. The bay colt by two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow opened up a two-length lead in early stretch and powered to a 4 ½-length win.
A quick turnaround 16 days later did not dull Strong Mandate and neither did a muddy track for the Hopeful Stakes.  He raced in third – just outside of Corfu and Wired Bryan, the top two finishers from the Saratoga Special Stakes – early in the seven-furlong Hopeful before jockey Jose Ortiz asked him to accelerate on the turn. Strong Mandate responded by inhaling Corfu and then powering away to a commanding lead in the stretch. He coasted to a 9 ¾-length romp that elevate him to among the top horses in the 2-year-old male division.
STRONG MANDATE MADE HIS HOPEFUL VICTORY LOOK EASY

A $200,000 purchase at the Keeneland September yearling sale, Strong Mandate followed up his 99 Equibase Speed Figure from his second start with a 100 in the Hopeful. Often, when young horses pairs a speed figure – meaning they turn in a performance on par with the one preceding it – he has a very good chance to improve in his next start given sufficient time to recover. Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas will have plenty of options for Strong Mandate, a colt he had high aspirations for even before his stakes debut in the Hopeful.
“We were pointing before the Breeders' Cup long before we won this,” Lukas said. “I'm going to look for a two-turn race. I don't know where that would be. We're in a position now where we can deal from a position of strength. Hell, we could go straight to the Breeders' Cup and not be too far off. We did it with Capote and some others.” 
Running style: Strong Mandate showed in his maiden win and in the Hopeful that he has plenty of speed. He’s capable of setting a brisk early pace, as he did in his first win, and still finishing strong. In the Hopeful, he showed a new dimension when he was willing to track opponents and respond when his rider asks him to shift gears.
The level of professionalism in the Hopeful in only his third start makes Strong Mandate very appealing moving forward, especially since he still showed a touch of immaturity when drifting out in the stretch. Strong Mandate clearly is still learning, and it’s possible this colt might only be scratching the surface.
When we take a look at his pedigree below, it’s easy to see that Strong Mandate’s best days should be ahead of him.
Connections: D. Wayne Lukas has trained a record 24 champions and amassed four Eclipse Awards as outstanding trainer. He was the leading trainer by North American purse earnings every year but one (1993, Bobby Frankel) between 1983 and 1997. But where Lukas has really left an indelible imprint on the history books has been in the Triple Crown.
When Oxbow won the 2013 Preakness, he gave Lukas his record-setting 14th victory in a U.S. classic race. Lukas previously shared the record of 13 with James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons.
Lukas won his first U.S. classic in 1980 with Codex’s Preakness triumph and he subsequently would dominate the Triple Crown in the 1990s, reeling off a record six straight classic wins beginning with Tabasco Cat’s victory in the 1994 Preakness through Grindstone’s 1996 Kentucky Derby win. Lukas was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1999.
STRONG MANDATE'S CONNECTIONS IN THE HOPEFUL WINNER'S CIRCLE

Bill Mack and Bob Baker, for whom Lukas has trained for more than two decades, own Strong Mandate. Mack and Baker raced 2002 Kentucky Derby runner-up Proud Citizen in partnership with David Cornstein. Mack and Baker also raced 2010 Derby seventh-place finisher Dublin and 2009 Derby runner Flying Private.
“These guys, Bill Mack and Bob Baker, have been with me 25 years. We've gone through a lot,” Lukas said. “We only buy two or three a year. Most years two, this year we got three. They've stayed with us. We've had Grand Slam and Dublin down through the years, and Scorpion. We got some nice horses, but I don't know if we've had one this good. This is a pretty good horse.”
Pedigree: Strong Mandate was the 12th Group or Grade 1 winner for his sire Tiznow, the only horse ever to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice (2000, 2001). An elite racehorse on the track, Tiznow has become an outstanding sire in his second career with 45 stakes winners and two champions from nine crops of racing age.
Of particular importance when assessing a young colt like Strong Mandate’s potential to improve as he gets older, most of Tiznow’s top runners excel going longer distances and get better and better as they mature. He has already sired a classic winner in 2008 Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara and counts 2008 Travers Stakes winner Colonel John, 2009 Dubai World Cup victor Well Armed, 2012 Wood Memorial Stakes winner Gemologist and Whitney Invitational winners Bullsbay and Tizway among his Grade 1-winning male progeny who were especially effective when stretching out in distance.
Strong Mandate also gets a healthy infusion of class from a strong female family. His dam (mother), Clear Mandate won a Grade 1 race at Saratoga at 1 ¼ miles and a Grade 1 at Keeneland Race Course at 1 1/8 miles while earning more than $1-million on the racetrack. Strong Mandate is her third stakes winner and ninth winner from 10 foals to race. His half-brother Newfoundland finished second in the 2004 Jockey Club Gold Cup and Suburban Handicap, both Grade 1s, and was a multiple graded stakes winner.
Strong Mandate’s second dam (maternal grandmother), Dream Deal was a Grade 1 winner and a producer of three stakes winners, including Grade 2 winner Dream Scheme. His third dam (maternal great-grandmother), Likely Exchange, won the 1979 Delaware Handicap – a Grade 1 race – and produced 1985 Belmont Stakes winner Crème Fraiche.
As good as Strong Mandate has looked on the racetrack in his two most recent starts, he looks even better on paper when you take a closer look at his pedigree. This is one 2014 classics hopeful who is absolutely loaded with class.

El fin de semana del Labor Day es usualmente demasiado temprano para pronosticar qué potrillo de 2 años se convertirá en un legitimo candidato para las carreras que comprenden la Triple Corona del próximo año, pero Strong Mandate, el ganador del Hopeful Stakes viene demostrando grandes condiciones al acercarnos a las carreras claves y preparatorias del otoño camino a la Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Capacidad: Strong Mandate nunca estuvo en carrera en su debut y terminó quinto sin amenazar, pero frecuentemente un debut es realmente sólo una experiencia de aprendizaje para un inmaduro potrillo de 2 años con apenas una escasa idea de lo que se espera de él.  Esa única carrera a veces puede ser un abrir de ojos para un caballo joven y parece que a Strong Mandate se le prendió el foco después de esa primera actuación. El entrenador Miembro del Salón de la Fama D. Wayne Lukas dijo que haberle agregado anteojeras también ayudó a Strong Mandate.
“Me gusta darle a todos mis caballos una carrera sin anteojeras y dejarlos que reciban arena en la cara y que pasen por todo el ejercicio. No quería que todos se quedaran en la partida como ha sucedido toda la temporada,,” Lukas dijo. “La segunda vez, verás a todos mis caballos con anteojeras y usualmente mejoran, si tienen condiciones.”
Strong Mandate tomó una mejor partida y controló los tiempos en una carrera tramitada sobre 1,300 metros el 17 de Agosto en Saratoga. El potrillo castaño hijo del dos veces ganador del Breeder´s Cup Classic, Tiznow, sacó dos cuerpos de ventaja al ingresar a la recta y arrolló para obtener una victoria por 4 1/2 cuerpos. 
Un rápido regreso en tan sólo 16 días no disminuyó a Strong Mandate ni tampoco una pista barrosa sobre la cual se corrió el Hopeful Stakes. El vino corriendo tercero – por fuera de Corfu y Wired Bryan, los dos primeros clasificados del Saratoga Special Stakes – tempranamente en los 1,400 metros del "Hopeful" antes que su jinete José Ortiz le pidiera acelerar en la curva. Strong Mandate respondió pasando a Corfu y luego distanciándose para pasar a comandar la punta en el derecho. “Estábamos apuntando a la "Breeders' Cup" mucho antes de ganar esto,” Lukas dijo. “Voy a buscarle una carrera con dos curvas. No sé donde será. Modalidad de correr: Strong Mandate demostró al salir de perdedores y en el "Hopeful" que tiene grandes dotes de velocidad.
