Bram Weinstein and Joe Kristufek return in 2016 to take fans step by step down the Triple Crown trail. The focus for this edition is Saturday’s Grade 2, $1-million Louisiana Derby, in which the winner earns 100 points toward a potential berth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Run over 1 1/8 miles, the $1-million Louisiana Derby is the first 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby points race of season.
Six of the last 10 Risen Star Stakes winners have gone on to win the Louisiana Derby.
This year, seven of 11 horses entered exit the Risen Star including the top five finishers: Gun Runner, Forevamo, Mo Tom, Candy My Boy and Zapperini as well as Tom's Ready (7th) and Uncle Walter (11th).
Trainer Mike Maker and owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey have won the last two editions of the Louisiana Derby (International Star, 2015; Vicar’s in Trouble, 2014). They send out the longshot Uncle Walter this year.
Todd Pletcher has won three of the last nine (Revolutionary, 2013; Mission Impazible, 2010; and Circular Quay, 2007). He saddles Battery this year.
The last Louisiana Derby winner to win the Kentucky Derby was Grindstone in 1996 and he ran second in the Arkansas Derby in between those two starts.
