America’s Best Racing and BetAmerica team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.
Each week, handicapper and avid gambler Monique Vág will provide at least one “Best Bet” of the weekend, ideal for a win bet. The post also will include some combination of additional bets for the weekend.
For some posts, Vág will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet.
She also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.
Place your bets at BetAmerica, which prides itself on outstanding customer service combined with the safety and security of wagering with a reputable advance-deposit wagering platform.
This Weekend’s Bets
Longshot Play
Saturday, Race 6, Gulfstream Park, 3:05 p.m. ET
#6 Tessier: She received some betting play in her debut, which I usually like to see in longshot plays. She'll be trying Lasix (furosemide) for the first time, like many other first-time starters in here. This addition could potentially help improve her performance significantly. I look at her one career start as a huge asset and I think she will outrun her big morning-line odds (15-1).
Exacta Box
Saturday, Race 6, Fair Grounds, New Orleans Ladies Overnight Stakes, 3:54 p.m. ET
#7 Tuttipaesi: She takes a big drop in here out of a Grade 3 to an overnight stakes race. My concern is that she hasn't raced in more than two months. Regardless, her consistent 90+ speed rating is obviously a positive. I do think she's deserving of favorite status, but she's exceptionally vulnerable. Her workouts thus far in 2016 haven't been impressive, so it's tough to gauge what kind of effort we'll see today.
#5 Cash Control: There's a lot to like. She's a proven winner at turf races of a mile or more, has won four of her last five starts and keeps jockey Shaun Bridgemohan aboard, plus her workout on March 13 (a half-mile in :47.60, the fastest off 99 at the distance) is a real eye-catcher. Regardless, I'm not entirely convinced. She's faced smaller fields in many of her past races and I'm not sure what surface she prefers more - dirt or turf.
#10 Susie Bee: This filly has a couple of really nice races. She's consistently raced on turf and has met 12-, 12-, 14- and 11-horse fields in her last four. The addition of Javier Castellano will certainly help. I don't mind the outside post because she doesn't want the lead. Worth a second look at 12-1 on the morning line; she could definitely outrun her odds today.
Best Bet
Sunday, Race 4, Gulfstream Park, 2:05 p.m. ET
#2 Sea Wizard: I typically don't back a horse who has been out of racing for quite some time, however there is definitely a ton to like about this colt. He's one of only three others with a career start thus far, ran second versus tougher in his last start, drops in class and comes off some sharp workouts in 2016. These are all helpful factors to put my mind at ease for being out of racing for more than five months. I like his chances today.
Best Bet
Sunday, Race 9, Santa Anita Park, Dream of Summer Stakes, 7:30 p.m. ET
#8 Singing Kitty: Her two 2016 starts have not been impressive at all, but I do like the addition of Gary Stevens. Judging by her recent two workouts in early March, it seems to me like she may have just needed a couple starts this year. She faces much easier in here. I'm a little reluctant to label her a "best bet," but I've gone over this race many times and I keep coming back to her.
