If there was ever a time to book a last-minute trip to a destination race, that time is now. Triple Crown on the line, California Chrome, a monster Belmont Stakes undercard, New York in June - seriously, what are you waiting for?
For those about to make the plunge, the fear is real. Hotels at a decent price are tough to come by in a peak market like this. Luckily, I’ve done the dirty work and found three hotels to fit any budget, all of which are located within firing distance of Belmont Park. Per usual, all have availability at publication, but probably not for long!
Win: The Wythe
The Rate: $490
The Lowdown: The Wythe is one of those artsy New York recreations that leaves you wondering, “How in the heck was this beautiful space just a warehouse up until two years ago?” Originally built in 1901 as a factory for barrels and casks—bourbon, anyone?—the overhaul of the brick building resulted in an artisanal hotel masterpiece. Rumor has it, if you inhale long enough, you can get a whiff of the old oak that was shaped within the walls for many a years.
The loft style makes for massive windows. Massive windows make for breathtaking views of Manhattan and Brooklyn from each room and “The Ides” rooftop bar. Even if you don’t book a room here, make a trip to the top at sunset. It’s open to the public and it is worth the trek.
It’s swanky all right, but it lacks pretentiousness at the same time. There’s plenty of treasured history here that blends well with the present. In that sense, The Wythe reminds me a lot of Thoroughbred racing.
Place: Hotel Indigo
The Rate: $225
The Lowdown: This joint is another minimalist Brooklyn enclave, but it comes in at a slightly more reasonable price than the Wythe. The Hotel Indigo is the working man’s boutique, featuring a rooftop patio and a modern interior.
Quirky is solid one-word summation of this establishment. And that’s fitting, considering the borough it’s located in, Brooklyn, appeals to an eclectic mix of hipsters, immigrants, and sports fans alike. If you’re looking to mix it up a bit, call Hotel Indigo “home base” for your weekend at Belmont.
Show: Hotel Vetiver
The Rate: $189
The Lowdown: This Long Island venue knows their target demographic and they cater to it perfectly, blending value with bold style. For budget Big Apple travelers, you’re not going to find a better bang for your buck.
There’s free Wi-Fi for staying up late and studying past performances, if you’re into that sort of thing. And as an added plus, this independent boutique touts sustainable, eco-friendly living quarters.
